About Jean

Hello, I’m Jean Smith, founder of Flirtology.

A Flirt Interpreter, I can give anyone the confidence – and skills – to attract and approach people. These skills can be used, equally, to wow the crowd at a party, to wow-ing the person of your dreams…

As a social and cultural anthropologist, I have always been curious about human behaviour.

My Philosophy: I found my niche, teaching people how to connect, when I moved to London in 1999. I discovered the reserved Brits could use a little help in the ‘interacting with strangers’ department. Since then, I have learnt that this is a world-wide conundrum. We are all looking for connection, but don’t know how to get it. As the founder of Flirtology, I believe this should be fun and easy. It’s a skill for everyone to learn. I teach people how to make connections with others: romantically, socially, and professionally.

My perspective is grounded in anthropology. It’s good to have social science as a base; it helps us differentiate between reality vs just stuff that our minds make up. This is especially important in the subjective and emotional areas of flirting, dating, and love. I conducted extensive research into the flirting and dating habits of 250 people in London, New York, Paris and Stockholm. My first book, The Flirt Interpreter, incorporated my research from project. It gave me much insight into how people actually think about these areas – what really happens –  not just what we believe to be true. Flirtology is also about fostering our connections in the real world. My latest book reminds people how and provides practical guidelines: Flirtology – Stop Swiping, Start Talking and Find Love. While it’s aimed at single people, it’s simply about how to communicate with each other.

My Cred:  I have appeared on TV, radio and in print commenting on topics ranging from dating, flirting and relationships, to wider social issues. I am a Tedx Speaker, and a frequent presenter on the London speaking circuit. I have spoken everywhere from the Royal Society of Medicine to the Royal Festival Hall. I also give talks internationally, most recently in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.  My television appearances include BBC Breakfast, Daybreak and ITV’s London Tonight. Print media appearances include The Telegraph, The Daily Mail, and Grazia. I have also been featured in a segment on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s hour on The Science of Flirting.

The Finale: I am passionate about individuals becoming the happiest versions of themselves, with a life full of options. Imagine a world where everyone was self-assured and secure? I also believe that happiness can only be achieved through meaningful relationships and contributing to a world much bigger than ourselves. I am one of the growing numbers, whose aim is to make the world a kinder, more connected place. Would you like to join me? Welcome to Flirtology.
