I love the band The Smith’s. On Friday night, I went to hear the, very good cover band, The Smyths. Not only did I have an amazing time, but I was hit on by fake Johnny Marr, and I met a woman who is a TED speaker’s coach. She’ll be arriving at my place shortly, to help me prepare for my Tuesday TEDx talk. Now, I’d say that was a good night out!

Richard Wiseman, a British psychologist, wrote a book called, The Luck Factor. He wanted to explore if some people were just born lucky, or if they were doing something different than everyone else. He found it was the latter. Extroverts, were the ‘luckiest’ people. The reason is that they had more contact with people, and shared what was going on in their lives.

As I was waiting for my friend to arrive on Friday night, I went to the bar to get a drink. I saw another woman standing on her own, and asked her if she was there for the concert. After quizzing me profusely, to see if I was a real Smith’s fan, we started chatting. (I think she finally relented after the gladiolas question). We spoke again after the concert, and she asked me what I did. I volunteered the information about my upcoming TED talk, and that’s when she told me she trained speakers as part of her job. We hit it off, and now we are in a trade system, where we can help each other.

Is this a coincidence? Is this luck? Not really. These opportunities are all around you. It’s up to you to seek them out.

Lesson 1: Make small talk. You never know whom you might meet.

Lesson 2: Don’t be afraid to tell people about yourself and what you are up to. There’s a difference between a 10 minute personal monologue, and giving people a few pieces of information about yourself, so they can get to know you.

If you’d like to put these tips to the test, we’d love for you to join us on a night out with one of our Fearless Flirting Tours of London! We will teach you how to approach and flirt without fear by arming you with even more techniques and a whole new way to view this flirting business.
